From construction sites to manufacturing plants, crane scales play a critical role in measuring suspended loads. We’ve explored how crane scales work, along with some of our favourite crane scales that we stock—but how do you actually choose the right one for you? In this short blog with Accurate Scale, let’s dive into the ins and outs of actually selecting your next crane scale.

Understand Your Worksite Conditions

Knowing your worksite conditions is just as important as the crane scale itself. The truth is, weighing hanging loads on dusty outdoor construction sites is very different from measuring pallets on an indoor loading dock. One of the best ways to ensure your crane scale can be used for daily operations is by verifying its ratings and construction are up to par. For example, a crane scale with an IP65 rating, like the MSI Tension Dynamometer Series, is well-suited for extra-dusty or occasional washdown environments.

As a rule of thumb, choose a crane scale that can withstand the harshest conditions it will encounter. Otherwise, an underrated scale risks premature failure, while an overrated one may be unnecessarily costly.

Know Your Capacity Requirements

It likely comes as no surprise that load size matters when choosing the right crane scale for your site. Understanding your load can be the difference between a reliable scale for years to come and one that lands you a costly ticket. Choose a crane scale capacity that comfortably supports (and exceeds) the maximum load you’ll need to measure when in operation.

Many crane scales are also designed with overload protection, a built-in safeguard that protects load cells and other internal components from overload damage. Take care to ensure that the safe overload rating matches your requirements for expected loads.

Ensure Clear Indicator Visibility

A reliable crane scale is easily visible from the operator’s distance. Make visibility a priority by choosing a crane scale with a prominent indicator that is easily seen from the operator’s distance. If the operator will only be a few feet away, a standard integrated display is often enough. That said, if the operator will be several feet away, or even on the ground, it may be worth considering an additional display. External indicators, such as the MSI-8000HD Digital Weight Indicator, make it easier to see measurements without moving the load.

Accuracy in Crane Scales

Crane scales are designed to provide consistent, precise readings for suspended loads. Though crane scales operate differently from traditional platform scales, quality models are engineered to minimize motion interference during measurements. Many modern crane scales offer accuracy ratings up to ±0.1% of full scale.

NTEP-certified crane scales ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Before choosing your crane scale, consult with a professional scale advisor.
